O-Level to SEC in 2027: What Tutors Need to Know

· 6 min read · By the TuitionCRM team

If you teach upper-secondary students, 2027 is a big year. The current Sec 3 cohort will be the first to sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) instead of the O-Level or N-Level. Parents will ask you about it — here's a clear summary.

What is the SEC?

In 2027, the GCE N(T)-Level, N(A)-Level and O-Level exams are combined and renamed the SEC, as part of Full Subject-Based Banding. Instead of a certificate tied to a stream, each student gets one certificate showing the subjects they took and the level they took each one at.

What changes

  • Subject levels instead of streams. Students take each subject at G3, G2 or G1, broadly matching the old Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) standards.
  • One common exam period. All students sit national exams under one timetable. SEAB's information says English and Mother Tongue written papers are in September, and other subjects from October to November.
  • Mother Tongue: one written sitting, with no retake of the written paper.

What stays the same

  • The standard of the exams — MOE has said there's no change in overall standards.
  • The exam format for each subject.
  • Recognition — SEAB, MOE and Cambridge continue to jointly award it, and it remains recognised locally and internationally.

What it means for your tuition

  1. Know each student's subject levels. Two Sec 4 students may now take Maths at different levels. Note it in their profile, and plan materials per level, not per "stream".
  2. Plan around an earlier finish for some papers. With English and Mother Tongue papers in September, your English students' crunch time shifts earlier. Book extra revision lessons in July–August.
  3. Expect mixed groups to get trickier. A group class of G3 and G2 students needs differentiated worksheets — or splitting.
  4. Use past O-Level papers wisely. Formats aren't changing, so past papers remain useful practice for G3 subjects.
  5. Update your marketing. Parents search for "SEC tuition" now. Mention G3/G2 levels in your profile and adverts.

Keep your exam calendar in one place

SEAB publishes the detailed timetable during the year. When it's out, add the key papers to your calendar so you never schedule a lesson on a student's exam day. Our Singapore exam dates page lists 2026 PSLE, O-Level, A-Level and IB papers and public holidays, and our guide to planning your tuition year around exams has a month-by-month plan.
