What moves a rate up or down

  • Exam years sit at the top of each band — P6, Sec 4/5 and JC2 — because parents value exam experience most.
  • Specialist subjects like H2 Maths, H2 Chemistry, Physics and IB HL are usually priced above General Paper or lower-secondary Science.
  • Home visits cost you travel time — many tutors charge S$5–10 more an hour, or set a minimum lesson length.
  • Group classes are cheaper per student but earn you more per hour: three students at S$35 beats one at S$70.
  • Demand: if your weekly slots are full and you have a waiting list, your price is too low.

Per hour, per lesson or per month?

Most tutors quote per hour, because that's what parents compare. But you can bill per lesson, a flat monthly fee (e.g. 4 lessons a month) or packages paid upfront. Our guide on how much to charge for tuition covers how to choose — and how to raise your rate without losing students.

Remember you're self-employed: your rate has to cover income tax and, above S$6,000 a year of net income, MediSave. See private tutor income tax in Singapore.
