Google Business Profile for Tutors in Singapore (2026)

· 8 min read · By the TuitionCRM team

When a parent searches “A Maths tutor Tampines” or “primary science tutor near me”, Google shows a map with three local results before anything else. Those spots go to tutors with a Google Business Profile — free to set up, and most private tutors in Singapore don't have one. Here's how to set yours up properly, in about 30 minutes.

Step 1: Create your profile

  1. Go to Google Business Profile and sign in with the Google account you'll use for your tuition.
  2. Enter your business name — your real name ("Linda Tan") or your registered business name ("Linda Tan Maths"). Nothing else.
  3. Choose your category (next step), then say you don't serve customers at your address unless you have a proper studio.
  4. Add your phone number (or WhatsApp number) and your website, if you have one.

Step 2: Pick the right category

Your primary category matters more than anything else for which searches you appear in. Most tutors should pick Tutoring service. You can add more categories for what you specifically teach if Google offers them — but don't stack unrelated ones; Google's guidelines ask you to use as few as needed to describe your core business.

Step 3: Hide your address and list your service areas

If you go to students' homes or teach online, Google's own service area guide says to remove your address and list the areas you serve instead. You can list up to 20 areas — towns or postal districts like Bishan, Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh — but not a radius, and it should stay within about two hours' travel.

Step 4: Get your name right (this is where most tutors get suspended)

It's tempting to name your profile “Linda Tan – Best O-Level Maths Tutor Bishan”. Don't. Google's guidelines for representing your business don't allow taglines, service descriptions or locations in the name, and profiles that do this get suspended. Put your subjects and areas where they belong — the description, services and service areas.

Step 5: Verify

Google has to confirm you're real before your profile appears. It chooses the methods available to you — a code by phone or text, email, a live video call, a video recording, or a postcard with a 5-digit code. After you finish, it usually takes up to 5 business days. See Google's verification help.

If you're asked to record a video, show proof of your tuition: your teaching materials, a whiteboard, your tutor website on screen, or an invoice with your name. Keep it short and continuous.

Step 6: Fill in everything parents look at

  • Description (750 characters): levels and subjects, your background (ex-MOE, NIE-trained, years of experience), and the areas you cover. Write for parents, not for Google.
  • Services: one per subject and level — “O-Level A Maths”, “PSLE Science”, “JC H2 Chemistry” — with your rate if you're happy to show it.
  • Hours: your real teaching hours, so parents know when to message.
  • Photos: a friendly photo of you, your teaching space or materials. Never photos of students without parents' written permission.
  • Website: your own page, so parents can see more and contact you on WhatsApp.

Step 7: Get your first 10 reviews

Reviews decide who parents call. Ask parents who are already happy — after a good result, a thank-you message, or 3 months of lessons. Copy your review link from the profile and send it on WhatsApp with a short, personal message. Google's tips to get more reviews say you can't offer discounts or gifts for reviews. Step 8: Keep it active

  • Reply to every review within a few days — future parents read your replies.
  • Post an update once or twice a month: a new slot for 2027, exam tips before the O-Levels, a parent's testimonial.
  • Answer questions parents ask on your profile, and keep your hours and services up to date.

Where Google fits with your other channels

Google brings parents who are actively searching — they convert well and you pay no commission. It works best alongside the other channels in how to find tuition students in Singapore: referrals from current parents, agencies and Telegram assignment channels while you build up. And once a parent finds you, a clean invoice with a PayNow QR and a private page for each parent keeps them — and their friends — coming.

Common questions

Do I need a business address to have a Google Business Profile?

No. If you teach at students' homes or online, set it up as a service-area business and hide your address — Google's guidelines say businesses that don't serve customers at their address should do exactly that. You list up to 20 areas you cover instead.

Can I use my home address if students come to me?

Only if you'd qualify as a storefront, which Google says needs permanent, fixed signage with your business name at the address. Most home tutors don't have that, so hiding the address and listing service areas is the safer choice.

Can I put “Best Maths Tutor Bishan” as my business name?

No. Google's guidelines say the name must match your real-world name, without taglines, service descriptions or locations added. Use your real name or business name, and put subjects and areas in your description, services and service areas.

How long does verification take?

Google decides which methods you get — phone or text, email, a live video call, a video recording or a postcard. After you finish, reviews usually take up to 5 business days. Postcards usually arrive within 14 days.

Do I need a registered business to set one up?

No. Individual tutors can create a profile under their own name. If you've registered a business with ACRA, use that registered name so it matches your invoices and website.

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes, it's free to create and keep. Google does sell ads, but you don't need them to appear in local results.
