How to Get More Google Reviews as a Tutor
· 6 min read · By the TuitionCRM team
When parents search for a tutor on Google, the ones with reviews get the calls. Ten honest reviews from real parents can bring you students every month — for free. Here's how to get them.
Step 1: Set up a free Google Business Profile
Create one at Google Business Profile. If you teach at students' homes or online, you can hide your address and show the areas you cover instead. Add your subjects, levels and a photo.
Step 2: Get your review link
In your Business Profile, click Ask for reviews and copy the link — it looks like g.page/r/…/review. Parents tap it and the review box opens straight away. Google's own tips to get more reviews explain the options.
Step 3: Ask at the right moment
- Right after a good test or exam result.
- When a parent thanks you or says something kind.
- At a milestone — 3, 6 or 12 months of lessons together.
- At the end of the year, when results come out (PSLE results come in late November).
Step 4: Send a short, personal message
"Hi Mrs Lim! Thank you for trusting me with Ryan's lessons 🙏 If you have a minute, would you leave a short Google review? It really helps other parents find me: [your link]. A line or two about how the lessons helped is perfect. Thank you!"
Step 5: Make it easy to say what helps
Parents often don't know what to write. Suggest they mention the level and subject ("Sec 4 A Maths") and what changed (confidence, grades). Reviews that mention the subject also help you appear when other parents search for it.
What not to do
- Don't offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews — Google's policies don't allow incentivised reviews.
- Don't write reviews yourself or ask friends who weren't your students' parents.
- Don't only ask the happiest parents and filter out the rest — ask consistently.
Reply to every review
A short thank-you under each review shows future parents you care — and keeps your profile active. Pair your reviews with a video testimonial or two for your social posts.
Common questions
Can I get Google reviews if I don't have a business address?
Yes. Set up your Business Profile as a business that serves customers in areas you choose, and hide your address.
Do parents need a Google account to leave a review?
Yes. Most parents with an Android phone or Gmail already have one. If they don't, ask for a written testimonial instead.
Why did a parent's review disappear?
Google filters reviews it thinks might be spam — for example, many reviews arriving at once. Ask parents a few at a time rather than all on the same day.
Can I remove a bad review?
Only if it breaks Google's rules — you can report it from your Business Profile. Otherwise, reply calmly and politely. Future parents read how you respond.
Can students write reviews instead of parents?
Yes, if they're old enough to have their own Google account, such as JC students. Parents' reviews tend to persuade other parents most.
